With calm beaches basically on your doorstep at Villa Mar Colina, and a wide range of free holiday activities for all ages to enjoy, creating a great family holiday while saving a buck has never been easier!

We’ve found five of the best free holiday activities in and around Yeppoon that you and your family can enjoy together.

1. The Yeppoon Lagoon and Keppel Kraken

It would be crazy to take a family holiday to Yeppoon and not enjoy the latest and greatest attraction in town – the Yeppoon Lagoon! Just a fifteen-minute walk along the beautiful Yeppoon Main Beach from Villa Mar Colina, the Yeppoon Lagoon has quickly become a favourite among both locals and tourists to swim, play and relax by the beach. With a resort-style pool patrolled by lifeguards, free entry and nearby seating and barbecues, you’ll be sure to have a fantastic day by the pool.

If you choose a beachfront walk on your way over to the Yeppoon Lagoon, you’ll be sure to pass by the Keppel Kraken. This zero-depth water play area features a host of interactive elements such as water cannons, jets and a unique umbrella bucket unlike anything else in Queensland. The kids can explore and play on the sea creature sculptures while Mum and Dad can keep an eye on them from the wooden deck and picnic tables surrounding the area. Being open seven days during the school holidays, it’s the perfect free holiday activity for kids and adults to cool off!

2. Street Art Hunt

On your walk to the Yeppoon Lagoon or Keppel Kraken, you might notice some of the incredible street art that’s popped up around Yeppoon. It’s everywhere, from the iconic bakers in Pie Alley, the Kraken on Barry St to Yeppoon’s most celebrated musical duo Busby Marou on the Yeppoon Town Centre Car Park. There are countless pieces within a short walking distance from Villa Mar Colina alone, but if you venture further you can find pieces such as the Selina Shipwreck at Wreck Point Lookout, a dedication to Groucho Marx on the Yeppoon Library or vibrant cockatoos at Emu Park. Hunting down these pieces is a fantastic free holiday activity you can enjoy on the Capricorn Coast!

3. Anzac Memorial Walk and Singing Ship

If you decide to take the 22-minute drive from Villa Mar Colina in Yeppoon down to Emu Park on your street art hunt, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the incredible Anzac Memorial Walk. Located just by Emu Park’s main beach, the walk is a beautiful and moving tribute to our soldiers and can be a fantastic way to teach your kids about the story of the Anzacs. This emotional and enlightening walk is unlike any other in such a small, regional town.

As you continue up the hill on a beautiful boardwalk above the beach, you’ll come to the Singing Ship. This amazing instrument is played by the wind blowing through it, creating beautiful, eerie and peaceful sounds. It’s an absolute must-see when coming to the Capricorn coast for your next family holiday – and completely free!

4. Bluff Point Bushwalk

Just a short 13-minute drive from Villa Mar Colina is Bluff Point, rising up between Kinka Beach and Kemp Beach. As part of the Capricorn Coast National Park, Bluff Point is famed for its amazing bushwalking track. While the full 2.3 km circuit might be better suited to those with some bushwalking experience, it’s only 600m to reach the famous Turtle Lookout, where you can look out over the stunning Keppel Islands and even spot turtles in the water below! If you continue for the full circuit, you’ll come across another lookout before heading back downhill through beautiful dense dry rainforest.

At the start of the walking track is a picnic ground with barbecues and public toilets, making it a fantastic spot for a picnic by the beach. There’s also access to Kemp Beach, where you can explore the rockpools and swim in calm waters. There’s even a shower for you to rinse off the salt and sand before heading back to Villa Mar Colina! This outing is sure to be the perfect free holiday activity for the adventurous family.

5. Stony Creek Picnic and Day-Use Area

A half-hour’s drive north of Villa Mar Colina, you’ll find the gem that is Stony Creek, nestled in the stunning Byfield National Park. This beautiful creek is surrounded by forests and pine trees, and there are plenty of picnic tables and barbecues for you to cook with – why not prepare a picnic ahead of time at Villa Mar Colina in your self-contained villa? Bringing your own shade is recommended but the day-use area is easy to access in just about any vehicle, and the tree-shaded swimming hole is the best way to cool off on a hot summer day. Getting out into the beauty of the Byfield National Park is a fun, free holiday activity you won’t forget!
